LTV (Lifetime Value)Total gross profit expected from a customer over their entire relationship with your company. Calculated as ARPU divided by monthly churn rate. CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)Total sales and marketing spend divided by the number of new customers acquired in the same period. Churn RateThe percentage of customers or revenue lost in a period — customer churn divides churned customers by total customers, and MRR churn divides churned MRR by prior-period MRR. Rule of 40Revenue growth rate % + profit margin % should sum to at least 40 for a healthy SaaS company. Balances growth and profitability as a composite health indicator. RunwayThe number of months a company can operate before exhausting its cash reserves. Gross MarginRevenue minus cost of goods sold, divided by revenue, expressed as a percentage. Contribution MarginRevenue minus variable costs only, showing how much each sale contributes to covering fixed costs. Gross PayTotal compensation before any deductions or taxes are withheld. Self-employment (SE) taxThe 15.3% tax (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare) a freelancer pays on 92.35% of net business income, covering both the employee and employer shares of payroll tax. Inventory Turnover RatioThe number of times a business sells and replenishes its average inventory during a period, usually one year. Calculated as COGS divided by average inventory. A higher ratio generally indicates better efficiency, but 'good' varies by industry — a grocery store at 25× is normal; a luxury goods retailer at 2× may be healthy. Capacity utilizationThe share of your available labor-hours that current demand consumes, shown as a percentage. Above 90% signals you are at or beyond capacity.
LTV = ARPU × gross margin % ÷ monthly churnCustomer lifetime value — what one customer is worth over their whole life, the number every CAC gets judged against.
Margin % = (revenue − COGS) / revenueGross margin — the share of every sales dollar left after direct costs, before overhead.
Inventory turns = COGS / average inventoryHow many times a year your stock sells through — higher turns mean less cash sleeping on the shelf.

Frequently asked questions

Which calculators do I need to run a P&L review?

Margin + Break-Even + Burn Rate + Runway give you the contribution-margin and time-to-zero picture. Add CAC and LTV for unit-economics health. The Business Metrics Fundamentals guide explains how the five numbers connect.

What's the difference between CAC and SaaS CAC payback?

CAC is the dollars spent to acquire one new customer (marketing + sales / new customers). SaaS CAC payback is the number of months of gross profit that customer must generate before they pay back the CAC. Healthy SaaS payback is <12 months.

Are the payroll calculators US-only?

The federal Payroll Tax calculator is US-only (FICA, FUTA, federal withholding). The Employee Cost and Contractor vs Employee calculators expose the underlying tax-rate inputs so you can model any jurisdiction.

Do these tools handle multi-currency?

Most accept currency-agnostic inputs (you choose the currency on entry). The Currency Converter on the Daily Life hub handles live cross-rates if you need to translate between two currencies first.

Which numbers should a brand-new business track first?

Start with Break-Even and Profit Margin — they tell you the sales volume and pricing you need to stop losing money. Once you're consistently profitable, add CAC and LTV to confirm each customer is worth more than it costs to acquire.
