Working with Business Days

Why Business Days Matter

Contracts, SLAs, legal deadlines, and shipping estimates all rely on business days. Misunderstanding business days vs. calendar days is one of the most common causes of missed deadlines. A '10-day delivery window' in business days is actually 14 calendar days — and can stretch to 16+ days around holiday weekends.

International Considerations

Business days vary by country. Many European countries observe more public holidays (10-15 per year) than the U.S. (11 federal). Some Middle Eastern countries use Sunday-Thursday as the work week. When working with international teams or clients, always specify the calendar standard being used.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a business day?+

A business day is any day that is not a weekend (Saturday or Sunday) and not a recognized public holiday. The calculator excludes both weekends and holidays from the count automatically. You can select from US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Germany holiday calendars to match your region.

Does the calculator include or exclude the start and end dates?+

When counting business days between two dates, the calculator excludes the start date and includes the end date by default, which matches the standard convention used in legal and financial contexts. When adding business days to a start date, the start date itself is not counted as day one.

Can I add custom holidays or non-working days?+

The calculator includes standard national holidays for supported countries. For company-specific closures, floating holidays, or industry shutdowns, you can manually adjust the result by subtracting those additional non-working days from the total. The holiday list covers the most widely observed public holidays for each region.

Why would I need to calculate business days?+

Business day calculations are essential for contract deadlines, payment terms (Net 30 often means 30 business days), shipping estimates, project scheduling, legal filing deadlines, SLA compliance tracking, and financial settlement periods. Using calendar days instead of business days for these purposes can lead to missed deadlines.

How accurate is the holiday data across different countries?+

The calculator includes all major federal and national holidays for each supported country through 2027. It covers fixed holidays like Christmas and Independence Day as well as floating holidays like Easter and Thanksgiving. Regional or state-level holidays are not included, so you may need to adjust for those manually.
