Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my real cost per mile?

Add every monthly cost of the car — payment, insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, registration — and divide by the miles you drive per month. Most owners land between $0.50 and $0.90 per mile; the AAA average for a new vehicle is roughly $0.80. The ownership widget above does the quick version, and the Car Ownership vs Rideshare calculator runs the full comparison.

Is leasing cheaper than buying?

Over a single 3-year term, leasing often has lower monthly payments — but you build no equity. Buying costs more per month yet leaves you with a car worth thousands at the end. The Lease vs Buy calculator compares total cost over the term including residual value, so the answer depends on how long you keep cars and how many miles you drive.

Do bigger tires really affect my speedometer?

Yes. Your speedometer counts wheel revolutions calibrated to the stock tire diameter. A taller tire covers more ground per revolution, so the speedometer reads low — at an indicated 60 mph you may actually be doing 62 or more. Most cars tolerate about ±3% diameter change; beyond that, recalibration or a different size is recommended.

Is an EV actually cheaper per mile than gas?

Usually, but it depends on your electricity rate and local gas prices. Home charging at a typical residential rate works out to roughly a third of the per-mile fuel cost of a comparable gas car; DC fast charging narrows the gap considerably. The EV Charging Cost and Gas vs Electric calculators run the math with your own rates.
