Power-to-weight ratio compares how much power an engine makes against how much mass it has to move, and it's one of the simplest, most reliable predictors of how quick a car feels off the line. This calculator converts horsepower and curb weight into both hp/ton and hp/lb, and tells you which informal performance tier the result falls into.

How the ratio is calculated

The calculator divides horsepower by weight two equivalent ways: horsepower per ton (weight ÷ 2,000) and horsepower per pound (weight as-is). hp/ton is the number you'll see quoted in most car reviews and comparison articles because it lands in a more readable range — typically 100 to 1,000 — while hp/lb is usually a fraction like 0.15.

Both numbers describe the exact same relationship; hp/ton is simply hp/lb multiplied by 2,000. Neither figure accounts for drivetrain losses, tire grip, aerodynamics, or gearing, so power-to-weight is a useful rough predictor of acceleration, not a precise 0-60 or quarter-mile calculator.

Horsepower and curb weight inputs

Use the manufacturer's rated crank horsepower — the figure on the window sticker or spec sheet, not wheel horsepower measured on a dyno (which is lower due to drivetrain loss). Curb weight should be the vehicle's weight as delivered, fully fueled, without a driver, passengers, or cargo; this is also the figure published on spec sheets and is what most published power-to-weight comparisons use.

Small changes in either input move the ratio a lot at the extremes — dropping 200 lb from a 3,000 lb car raises hp/ton by roughly the same percentage as adding 20 hp, so both weight reduction and power gains matter for a meaningful improvement.

Limits of power-to-weight as a performance measure

Power-to-weight ratio is a strong predictor of acceleration but not the whole story. Two cars with identical hp/ton can have very different 0-60 times if one has all-wheel drive and better tire grip, or if torque delivery differs sharply across the rev range (as with electric motors, which deliver peak torque instantly and often outperform their hp/ton figure suggests). Aerodynamics also matters more at higher speeds than power-to-weight alone can capture. Treat the tier classification here as a rough guide for comparison, not a guarantee of real-world performance.
