VDOTJack Daniels' effective VO2max derived from race performance. A VDOT of 40 is recreational, 50 is competitive age-group, and 60+ is elite amateur — the single number drives all training paces. Negative SplitRunning the second half of a race faster than the first. Research consistently shows negative splits produce optimal performance by avoiding early lactate accumulation. Zone 2 TrainingModerate aerobic work at 60–70% HRR, often called "conversational pace." Extensive Zone 2 work builds mitochondrial density and fat oxidation capacity — the aerobic base for endurance sports. 1RM (One-Rep Max)The maximum weight you can squat for exactly one complete repetition with proper form. It is the anchor for virtually every percentage-based strength program. Wilks ScoreA formula for comparing lifters of different body weights by multiplying the lifted weight by a bodyweight-derived coefficient. The Wilks formula was updated in 2020 with improved coefficients. The Mendoza LineAn informal threshold of .200 batting average, named after light-hitting shortstop Mario Mendoza. Hitting below this level generally makes a player unplayable offensively. ERA (Earned Run Average)The number of earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings, calculated as (Earned Runs ÷ Innings Pitched) × 9. Lower is better; the 2024 MLB league average sits near 4.20. Implied ProbabilityThe win probability embedded in a set of odds. Calculated by converting odds to a percentage. Because bookmakers build in a margin (vig), the implied probabilities of both sides of a bet sum to more than 100%. FTP (Functional Threshold Power)The highest average power output a cyclist can sustain for approximately one hour without accumulating fatigue-causing lactate. FTP is the foundation of training zone calculation and performance prediction. It is measured in watts and is the most widely used single metric in structured cycling training. Age GradingA statistical method for adjusting athletic performance results to account for the natural physiological decline that occurs with aging, enabling meaningful comparison of performances across different age groups. Developed by the World Association of Veteran Athletes (now World Masters Athletics) in the 1980s using world age-group records.
pace = time / distanceThe foundation of every race plan — minutes per mile (or km) from total time over total distance.
1RM = w × (1 + reps / 30)The Epley formula: estimate your one-rep max from any weight you can lift for multiple reps.
AVG = hits / at-batsBatting average — baseball's oldest stat, walks and sacrifices excluded from the denominator.

Frequently asked questions

Which 1RM formula is most accurate — Epley or Brzycki?

Both are accurate within ±5% for reps in the 1–10 range. Epley (weight × (1 + reps/30)) tends to read slightly higher above 5 reps; Brzycki (weight / (1.0278 − 0.0278 × reps)) reads slightly lower past 10 reps. For 3–5-rep working sets, the results are essentially identical. The full Squat / Bench / Deadlift calculators surface both side-by-side.

Why are sports betting probabilities <100% when summed?

The implied probabilities of both sides of a moneyline always sum to >100% — that excess is called the "vig" or "juice" and is how the sportsbook makes its margin. A typical 2-sided market has 4–5% vig. The full Moneyline + Point Spread calculators surface the vig + true (no-vig) probability explicitly.

Does the Marathon Pace calculator account for elevation?

The widget shows flat-course pace. Elevation cuts roughly 12–20 sec/mile for every 100 ft of climbing on a steady grade — use the Elevation Adjustment calculator to back-solve grade-adjusted pace, then plug that into the Marathon Pace widget.

Why doesn't a higher Wilks score always mean stronger?

Wilks normalizes total weight by bodyweight and sex — but it's been criticized for under-rating very light and very heavy lifters. The IPF GL formula (replaced Wilks 2 in 2020) is now the official IPF-meet standard. The full Powerlifting Total calculator surfaces both alongside the raw total.

Is fantasy-baseball scoring different across leagues?

Yes — ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, and Fantrax all use slightly different point values. ESPN gives +4 for a HR; Yahoo gives +5. The Fantasy Points calculator lets you pick the league format up-front; weekly totals diverge by ~5–10% between formats.
