WHIP Tier Reference

WHIP (Walks + Hits) ÷ Innings Pitched. Lower is better — it measures how many baserunners a pitcher allows per inning.

Note: Mariano Rivera's 2008 mark reflects a relief pitcher context (shorter outings vs. starters).

How WHIP compares to ERA: ERA measures earned runs per 9 innings. WHIP measures baserunner prevention regardless of whether those runners score — making it a leading indicator of future ERA and less influenced by sequencing luck. A pitcher with a low WHIP but high ERA is likely experiencing bad strand-rate luck and should see ERA improvement over time.

2024 MLB context: League average WHIP was ~1.30. Top-25 starting pitchers typically posted WHIPs below 1.15. A WHIP below 1.00 puts a pitcher among the elite — historically only a handful of starters achieve this in any given season.
