Winning percentage is one of the oldest performance statistics in team sports. First formalized in professional baseball standings in the 1870s, it has remained the universal benchmark for team quality across every major sport. While the calculation is simple — wins divided by games played — the interpretation requires understanding ties, partial seasons, and the mathematical constraints that govern what records are actually achievable with a given number of games remaining.
Why Ties Count as Half a Win
The half-win convention for ties dates to early professional baseball and has since been adopted universally. The rationale is straightforward: a tie represents exactly half of a full outcome. If a game were replayed with all outcomes equally likely, the tied team would win 50% and lose 50% — so crediting 0.5 wins and 0.5 losses captures the expected value accurately. In the NFL, where ties occur occasionally in regular season overtime games, this convention is codified in the official standings rules. A team that goes 9-7-1 has a winning percentage of (9 + 0.5) / 17 = .559, not 9/17 = .529. The difference is small but meaningful in tight divisional races.
Reading Standings and Games Back
The three-decimal standings format (e.g. .667) was designed for visual clarity in newspaper boxes. The leading zero is omitted because standings columns are narrow and the integer part before the decimal is always 0 or 1 — the only exception being a perfect record, which reads as 1.000. Winning percentage naturally orders teams in standings, but the companion metric games back (GB) provides a more intuitive measure of the gap between teams. A half-game lead means the leader has played one more game and won it; a 2.5-game lead means three full game-swings are needed to tie. Partial Seasons and Sample Size
Winning percentage becomes unreliable at small sample sizes because a single result changes it dramatically. A team that starts 5-0 has a 1.000 winning percentage, but after 162 games, the maximum achievable from that start is around .660 if they go .600 the rest of the way. Early-season winning percentages should be treated as point estimates with wide confidence intervals. A useful rule of thumb: for MLB, wait until 30–40 games (roughly 20–25% of the season) before placing significant weight on a team's winning percentage.
