Undersized injectors run out of fuel exactly when an engine needs it most, causing a dangerous lean condition at high RPM and boost; oversized injectors hurt idle quality and low-speed drivability. This calculator turns a horsepower target, BSFC, cylinder count, and a safe duty-cycle ceiling into the minimum injector size that keeps the engine fed with margin to spare.
How the Fuel Injector Size Calculator works
The calculator first finds total engine fuel flow by multiplying target horsepower by BSFC (brake specific fuel consumption), the fuel mass burned per horsepower per hour. Dividing that total by the number of cylinders gives the flow each injector must supply on its own. Because running an injector at 100% duty cycle leaves no margin for transient enrichment or cold starts, the calculator divides again by your chosen maximum duty cycle (80% by default) to arrive at the minimum-rated injector size that can hit the target while staying under that ceiling. The result is shown in both lb/hr and the equivalent cc/min using the standard x10.5 gasoline conversion factor.
Why E85 needs bigger injectors
Ethanol-heavy fuels like E85 carry meaningfully less energy per gallon than gasoline, so an engine burning E85 must flow more fuel mass to make the same horsepower. Selecting E85 scales the calculated total fuel flow up by about 30% before it's divided across cylinders and duty cycle, which is why the same 500 hp target that needs a ~39 lb/hr injector on gasoline needs roughly a ~51 lb/hr injector on E85 — a difference large enough to require an actual injector swap, not just a tune change.
Reading the Duty Cycle and unit-conversion tabs
The Duty Cycle tab flips the math around: given an injector size you already own, it reports the duty cycle that injector must run at to hit your horsepower target, flagging anything past a safe ~85% ceiling. The lb/hr to cc/min tab is a plain bidirectional unit converter, useful because American injectors are usually rated in lb/hr while OEM and European parts are usually rated in cc/min, and the two numbers are easy to mix up when shopping for parts.
