This calculator applies the industry-standard 1.5x GVWR rule, adjusted for terrain, so you can pick a winch rated for the pulls you'll actually make.

How the Winch Size Calculator works

The calculator starts from your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) — its fully loaded weight, not its lighter curb weight — and multiplies by 1.5. That baseline 1.5x factor is the widely-taught margin recommended by winch manufacturers and 4x4 recovery instructors: real-world pulls are rarely simple static lifts, so a winch rated at exactly your vehicle's weight is undersized the moment friction, an incline, or a stuck tire enters the picture.

On top of the 1.5x baseline, the calculator applies a terrain factor: 1.0x for easy, flat, firm-ground pulls; 1.1x for moderate resistance like light mud, sand, or a gentle incline; and 1.25x for extreme conditions — deep mud, soft sand, or a steep incline — where suction and grade add substantial extra load beyond the vehicle's static weight.

Inputs and what they mean

Vehicle GVWR is the single most important input — use the number from your door-jamb sticker or owner's manual, not your vehicle's unloaded curb weight. If you expect to winch out a loaded trailer as well, add the trailer's fully-loaded weight to the GVWR you enter, since the winch has to move that combined weight.

Terrain / pull difficulty should reflect the worst conditions you realistically expect to winch in, not your average trail day — sizing for the hardest likely pull avoids being caught short exactly when you need the extra margin most.

Limits and edge cases

This is a sizing heuristic, not a certified engineering calculation — it doesn't account for cable/rope type, line speed, battery and alternator capacity, or double-line rigging with a snatch block (which can effectively double pulling capacity for a single pull, at half the line speed, but doesn't change what winch you should buy). Extremely heavy vehicles or trailers, technical rock-crawling recoveries, or winching on unstable anchors may call for a professional recovery assessment rather than a rule-of-thumb formula. Always inspect your winch, cable/rope, and mounting points before a pull, and never exceed the manufacturer's rated capacity.
