How the Road Trip Fuel Cost Calculator works
Each leg's fuel cost is calculated the same way a basic trip-cost estimate works: divide the leg's distance by your vehicle's MPG to get gallons consumed, then multiply by that leg's local gas price. The calculator sums every leg's cost to produce the trip total, sums every leg's distance for total mileage, and derives a distance-weighted average gas price and average cost per mile so you can compare the trip to other routes or vehicles.
Inputs and what they mean
MPG is a single combined fuel-economy figure applied to every leg — use your vehicle's real-world average rather than the EPA sticker rating if you know it differs. Each leg needs a distance in miles and a local gas price in dollars per gallon; you can add up to 8 legs, which is enough to model most multi-day road trips including state-by-state price changes. Leaving a leg's distance or price blank excludes it from the total until both fields are filled in.
Limits and edge cases
The calculator assumes a single MPG for the whole trip — it does not account for terrain, speed, cargo weight, or towing, all of which can meaningfully change real-world fuel economy leg to leg. It also only estimates fuel cost; it does not include tolls, lodging, food, or maintenance.
