Volume and weight aren't the same thing, and in cooking that distinction matters more than most people realize. This calculator converts milliliters to grams (and back) for common cooking liquids by applying each ingredient's specific density, so you can move confidently between a recipe written in volume and a kitchen scale reading in weight.
How the mL to Grams Converter (Cooking) works
The calculator multiplies the volume you enter by the selected ingredient's density in grams per milliliter (g/mL): grams = mL × density. Going the other direction, it divides: mL = grams ÷ density. Water is the reference point at exactly 1.00 g/mL by definition, and the other five liquids are set relative to it using standard density references (USDA FoodData Central and King Arthur Baking's ingredient-weight charts): milk 1.03, vegetable oil 0.92, honey 1.42, heavy cream 1.01, and maple syrup 1.32 g/mL.
Inputs and what they mean
Pick the ingredient from the dropdown — this sets the density used in the formula. Choose a direction (mL → g or g → mL) depending on which unit your recipe or scale gives you. Then enter the amount. The Ingredient Table tab lists all six densities side by side so you can compare how much a given volume of each liquid weighs, and the currently selected ingredient is highlighted so it's easy to find.
Limits and edge cases
These densities are room-temperature averages — a specific brand, temperature, or moisture content can shift the true density by a percent or two, which is fine for everyday cooking but not precise enough for a lab. Honey and maple syrup in particular vary a bit by moisture content and crystallization. For any liquid not in this list, water (1.00 g/mL) is a reasonable starting estimate for thin liquids, but thicker or fattier liquids should use a matching density if precision matters — when in doubt, weigh a known volume on a kitchen scale to check.
