Butter is one of the few baking ingredients that recipes measure in wildly different units depending on where they were written — sticks and cups in the US, grams almost everywhere else, and tablespoons on either side. This calculator converts between all six common units using the same 113 g stick that's marked on every US butter wrapper, so a recipe written in any of them can be followed with confidence.
How the Butter Measurement Converter works
The calculator anchors every conversion to a single fact: a standard US butter stick weighs 113 grams. From there, a cup is defined as two sticks (226 g), a tablespoon as 1/8 of a stick (14.125 g), a teaspoon as 1/3 of a tablespoon (about 4.71 g), and an ounce as 1/4 of a stick (28.25 g). To convert, the calculator multiplies your entered amount by the source unit's grams-per-unit value to get a weight in grams, then divides that weight by the target unit's grams-per-unit value. Routing every conversion through grams this way keeps all six units internally consistent, so converting stick → gram → cup → tablespoon and back always returns your original number.
Inputs and what they mean
The calculator takes three inputs: an Amount (any positive number), a From unit, and a To unit. The From unit tells the calculator what your entered amount is measured in; the To unit is what you want it converted to. Limits and edge cases
This calculator assumes standard US stick-marked butter (113 g/stick). European and UK butter is typically sold in unmarked 250 g blocks rather than sticks — if a recipe specifies a European block by weight, convert using the Gram unit rather than assuming it maps evenly onto US stick fractions. The calculator also doesn't distinguish salted from unsalted butter, since both have essentially identical weight and volume for measurement purposes — the difference is in the recipe's added salt, not the conversion math. Finally, very small amounts (a fraction of a teaspoon) are hard to measure precisely by volume at home; weighing on a kitchen scale is more accurate whenever the recipe allows it.
