Ham cooking time depends on two things above all else: whether the ham is fully cooked (and just needs reheating) or fresh/raw (and needs full cooking), and whether it's bone-in or boneless. This calculator uses the official USDA FSIS Timetable for Cooking Ham, so you get a realistic time range instead of a single number that assumes every ham behaves identically.

How the cooking-time lookup works

Unlike some roasts, ham doesn't have one universal minutes-per-pound rate — the USDA publishes separate rates depending on whether the ham needs reheating or full cooking, and whether it's bone-in or boneless. This calculator matches your entered weight and selections against four USDA reference rows: fully cooked bone-in (15–18 min/lb), fully cooked boneless/vacuum-packed (10–15 min/lb), fresh bone-in (18–20 min/lb), and fresh boneless/picnic-shoulder (30–35 min/lb), all at a 325°F oven.

These figures are estimates. Oven calibration, how cold the ham was going in, and its exact shape can all shift the actual time by 15-20 minutes in either direction. Time gets you in the right window — a food thermometer gets you to done.

Inputs and what they mean

Weight should be the whole-ham weight in pounds, as printed on the packaging or measured on a kitchen scale. Ham Type — Fully Cooked means the ham is already safe to eat cold and only needs reheating to 140°F (165°F if repackaged or leftover); Fresh (Raw) means it must be fully cooked to 145°F before it's safe to eat. Bone-In vs. Boneless changes the minutes-per-pound rate because bone conducts heat differently than solid meat — a bone-in ham of the same type generally needs more time per pound than a boneless one.

Limits and edge cases

This chart assumes a conventional 325°F oven and a ham that isn't frozen — it does not cover country ham (which is soaked and boiled, not baked) or canned ham (which uses its own reheating rate). Weights outside each cut's USDA reference range are estimated from the nearest rate and should be treated as a rougher guide. Spiral-cut hams are pre-sliced and reheat a bit faster than a solid whole ham, but also dry out more easily — cover them loosely with foil, or serve cold, which USDA notes is also safe for a fully cooked ham. Whatever the calculator says, the ham is only done when a food thermometer reads the correct target in the thickest part, away from the bone.
