How the Cups to Pounds Converter works
The calculator multiplies the amount you enter by a per-ingredient bulk density: lb = cups × densityLbPerCup(ingredient). Each ingredient's density is based on standard unsifted, scoop-and-level cup measurements from USDA food composition data and King Arthur Baking's published ingredient weight charts. For example, a cup of all-purpose flour weighs about 125 g (0.2756 lb), while a cup of butter — which is dense and has no air pockets — weighs about 227 g (0.5004 lb).
When you switch the direction to Pounds → Cups, the calculator simply divides instead of multiplying, using the same density constant: cups = lb ÷ densityLbPerCup(ingredient).
Inputs and what they mean
The Ingredient dropdown selects which density constant to use — this is the input with the biggest effect on the result, since densities range from about 0.20 lb/cup (rolled oats) to about 0.52 lb/cup (water and butter). The Amount field accepts the quantity you're converting, and the Direction dropdown determines whether that amount is in cups (converting to pounds) or pounds (converting to cups).

Limits and edge cases
