How the Brine Ratio Calculator works
The calculator first converts your entered brine volume to liters, then applies the standard approximation that 1 liter of water weighs 1000 g. Multiplying that water weight by your target salinity percentage gives the total salt weight in grams — this is the same salt-weight-to-water-weight definition of brine percentage used by professional kitchens. To express that weight as a volume measure, the calculator divides by a grams-per-cup constant specific to your chosen salt type, since kosher salt flakes pack much less densely than fine table salt.
Inputs and what they mean
Brine volume is the total water in your brine — enter it in gallons, quarts, or liters. Salt percentage is the target salinity by weight; 5–6% is the standard range most recipes and food-safety guidance recommend for a wet brine. Salt type only affects the volume measurement (cups/tablespoons/teaspoons) shown in the result — the underlying salt weight in grams is the same regardless of which salt you pick, since that's the number that actually determines the brine's strength.
Limits and edge cases
Always measure salt by weight with a kitchen scale when precision matters — volume measurements are convenient but less accurate because salt density varies by brand, humidity, and how tightly it's packed into the measuring cup. This calculator computes a wet brine, which uses a water-based salt-to-water ratio; a dry brine uses a completely different salt-to-meat-weight ratio and isn't modeled here. It also doesn't account for optional sugar additions — sugar can be added to a brine independently without changing the salt math above.
