Why area, not diameter, is what matters
It's tempting to compare pans by a single number like diameter or side length, but that's misleading — area grows with the square of size, not linearly. A 10-inch round pan isn't 25% bigger than an 8-inch one; its area is over 55% bigger. Comparing pans by area (πr² for round, length × width for square and rectangular) is the only way to know how much batter a substitute pan actually needs.
Scaling the batter and the rest of the recipe
Once you have the scale factor — new pan area divided by original pan area — apply it to every ingredient quantity, not just the batter volume, to keep the recipe's proportions intact. A scale factor near 1, like the well-known 9-inch round ≈ 8-inch square substitution, needs little to no adjustment at all. Bigger changes, like combining two round layers into one rectangular pan, need a proportionally bigger batch.
Bake time, temperature, and fill depth
Area alone can't perfectly predict bake time — pan depth and how full you fill it also matter, which is why this calculator's bake-time guidance is qualitative rather than a precise minute count. As a rule of thumb: fill any pan to about two-thirds full, keep the original oven temperature unless the new pan is notably deeper, and use a toothpick test rather than relying purely on the clock. A pan with much more area than the original may need 10-15% more time; one with much less may be done 5-10 minutes early.
