Guessing wrong makes a bow feel awkward and hurts accuracy, but a full professional fitting isn't always available before a first purchase. This calculator applies the same wingspan ÷ 2.5 formula archery shops use to give you a reliable starting estimate in seconds.
How the Archery Draw Length Calculator works
The calculator divides your tip-to-tip wingspan by 2.5, the Archery Trade Association standard used by bow manufacturers and shops for beginner fittings. This ratio comes from the geometry of a relaxed full-draw anchor position — for most adults, the distance from bow hand to anchor point at full draw works out to almost exactly 40% of wingspan, regardless of height, build, or gender.
The calculator also offers an alternative, height-adjusted formula: it averages your wingspan and height before dividing by 2.5. This variant is used by some fitters as a secondary check, since it slightly corrects for archers whose wingspan and height diverge from the typical near-1:1 ratio.
Inputs and what they mean
The only required input is wingspan (arm span): stand with your back against a wall, stretch both arms out horizontally at shoulder height, and measure fingertip to fingertip. This single measurement drives the standard estimate.
Height is optional and only used by the Alternative Method tab. If you skip it, the calculator still gives you the full standard-method result — height only matters if you want to see the height-adjusted comparison.
Limits and edge cases
Both formulas are starting estimates, accurate to roughly half an inch for most people — good enough to pick a bow to try, not a substitute for a hands-on fitting. Archers with unusual proportions (notably long or short arms relative to height), young or still-growing archers, and anyone transitioning between bow types should confirm draw length with a professional fitting at an archery shop, which measures actual draw length at full extension with a draw-length arrow.
The nearest-size rounding assumes the common 0.5" manufacturing increment; some bows (especially traditional recurves) are sized in whole inches only, so always check the specific bow's available draw-length range before buying.
