One-Rep Max (1RM)

The maximum weight a person can lift for a single repetition of a given exercise. Used to prescribe training loads as a percentage of 1RM. Can be estimated from submaximal lifts using Epley or Brzycki formulas.

Rather than risk a true max attempt, lifters usually estimate 1RM from a submaximal set using formulas like Epley or Brzycki. Training programs then prescribe loads as a percentage of 1RM to target strength, hypertrophy, or endurance.

Key Formula & Relationship
Brzycki: 1RM = Weight Lifted / (1.0278 - 0.0278 × Reps)
