FTP (Functional Threshold Power)
The highest average power (in watts) a cyclist can sustain for approximately one hour. Used to set training zones for cycling. FTP is typically measured with a 20-minute all-out effort and multiplied by 0.95.
Expressed in watts, FTP marks the boundary between sustainable and unsustainable effort. Cyclists set their training zones as percentages of FTP, and a common field test multiplies a hard 20-minute average by 0.95 to estimate it.
Key Formula & Relationship
FTP ≈ 95% of a 20-minute all-out average power
