Buying the right amount of ham for a gathering comes down to two questions: how many people are you feeding, and are you buying bone-in or boneless? This calculator applies standard catering per-person allowances to your guest count so you know how many pounds to buy before you get to the store.

How the Ham Per Person Calculator works

The calculator multiplies your guest count by a per-person allowance: 0.75 lb per guest for boneless ham, or 1.0 lb per guest for bone-in ham. These are standard catering rules of thumb — bone-in ham needs a higher purchase weight because roughly a quarter to a third of the total weight is bone and trim that guests never eat. If you request a leftover buffer, the calculator multiplies the result by 1.2 (a 20% cushion) so you have enough for sandwiches or a second meal.

Inputs and what they mean

Guest count is the number of people you're serving, from 1 to 500. Ham type is either boneless (higher edible yield, lower per-person weight) or bone-in (classic holiday presentation, lower edible yield, higher per-person weight). Leftovers is a simple yes/no toggle that adds a 20% buffer to whichever base total you land on.

Limits and edge cases

Hams are sold in fixed pre-packaged weights, not the exact fractional pound the calculator returns — round up to the nearest size your butcher or grocer carries. Spiral-cut hams follow the bone-in ratio since they still include the bone. For very large gatherings (25+ guests), consider buying two smaller hams instead of one large one — it's easier to carve, serve, and store, and the per-person math scales the same either way.
