Value each signed cash flow at the selected anchor, preserve the chosen timing and currency basis, and distinguish receipt valuation from the legacy savings accumulation convention.
The Time Value of Money Explained
Present value translates each stated cash flow to a common valuation anchor. In model-year mode the anchor is time zero, with an optional calendar-date label. In dated mode the entered valuation date determines every elapsed time using actual UTC days divided by 365. A cash flow on that date is undiscounted. A positive amount is a receipt and a negative amount is an outflow, so an initial purchase cost belongs in the ledger once with a negative sign.
For example, a $121 receipt in two model years at 10% annual compounding has a factor of 1/1.1² and PV of $100. At a zero discount rate its PV is $121. If a $10 receipt occurs at the end of each of those years, their combined PV is about $17.36 and the complete receipt PV is about $117.36. The final recurring payment and the terminal receipt are separate rows. The chart, table and exports use this same raw ledger; displayed amounts are rounded independently.
Choosing the Right Discount Rate
The discount rate is an entered valuation assumption, not a promise that an investment can earn that return. Choose a rate consistent with the cash flows, their uncertainty and their currency basis. Nominal cash flows include the price-level assumptions built into those amounts and require a matching nominal rate. Cash flows already stated in constant purchasing-power terms require a matching real rate. The basis selector records this choice without converting either the amounts or the rate automatically.
The same-flow comparison changes the entered rate and timing shift while retaining the stated cash amounts. Positive future receipts generally have lower PV at a higher positive rate, but a signed stream can behave differently because outflows are discounted too. Changing all dates also changes the valuation of time-zero entries. A comparison is therefore a mathematical sensitivity, not an investment ranking. Check the convention, date anchor and sign of every row before interpreting the difference. Credit risk, taxes, liquidity, fees and suitability require their own explicit assumptions and are not inferred by this calculator.
Lump Sum vs. Annuity Decisions
The main receipt equation adds the PV of a terminal amount to the PV of recurring payments. Ordinary payments occur at completed period ends through the horizon; beginning payments occur before the horizon. A partial final period does not create an extra discrete payment. When payment growth equals the discount rate, the finite geometric-sum limit is used rather than division by a zero difference. At a zero rate, signed undiscounted payments are simply added.
The continuous setting represents a payment stream integrated over time, not a sequence of invented calendar payments. Its ledger therefore identifies intervals and their PV-to-nominal average factors. Savings FV is a separate preserved convention: positive PMT means later deposits that accumulate with the starting savings. Its transaction receipt shows initial savings and deposits as outflows and the ending balance as an inflow. At the same assumed rate that transaction has approximately zero net PV. Receipt-inverse FV instead subtracts recurring receipt PV before solving for the terminal amount. Select the convention deliberately before comparing outputs across modes.
Net Present Value and Investment Decisions
A complete signed cash-flow receipt can express net present value by including the initial outflow at time zero. For example, an outflow of $1,000 today and an inflow of $1,100 exactly one model year later have zero net PV at 10% annual compounding. Do not subtract the initial $1,000 again after it has already been included as a negative row. Dated examples need their own explicit anchor and actual day differences; a calendar year containing a leap day does not automatically equal 365 days.
Paste preview validates the complete two-column input before replacing the editor. A malformed row leaves the existing valid ledger unchanged. The detailed view paginates long schedules, while CSV contains every raw cash flow, date where applicable, factor, PV contribution, cumulative sum and convention. Print lists a bounded ledger with an explicit continuation notice for longer schedules. Remember is a separate device-storage choice, and ordinary recalculation does not publish financial inputs in the URL. A shared financial link is created only after its disclosure preview is reviewed.
