Every appliance has a hidden running cost, and the number on the rating label only tells half the story. This guide shows how to turn wattage and hours into real dollars, where to find an appliance's wattage, which devices quietly dominate your bill, and how to cut phantom load.

How the calculation works

Electricity is billed in kilowatt-hours — power multiplied by time. Take the appliance's wattage, multiply by the hours you run it, and divide by 1,000 to get kWh. A 1,500-watt heater run 3 hours a day uses 4.5 kWh; at $0.17/kWh that's about $0.77 a day. Multiply by 30.44 for a month and 365 for a year.

The calculator adds two refinements most tools skip: standby (phantom) power over the idle hours, and a days-per-week factor for appliances you don't run every day. It also estimates CO₂ by multiplying annual energy by your grid's emission factor.

Finding an appliance's wattage

Look for the rating label or nameplate — usually a sticker on the back or bottom, or a stamped plate near the power cord. It lists watts (W) directly, or amps (A) and volts (V). If you only see amps, multiply by the voltage (120 V for standard US outlets, 240 V for large appliances like dryers and ovens): watts = amps × volts. A 12.5 A microwave on 120 V draws 1,500 W.

Labels list maximum draw, which can overstate real use for devices that cycle or run below full power. A plug-in power meter (Kill-A-Watt and similar) measures actual consumption over time, including standby, and is the gold standard for an accurate estimate.

The biggest energy hogs

Two things make an appliance expensive: high wattage and long run-time. Resistive heating wins on both — space heaters, electric water heaters, dryers, ovens, and AC are typically the top of any home's list. A low-wattage device that runs 24/7, like a refrigerator or an old set-top box, can out-cost a high-wattage device you use for minutes. Phantom load and how to cut it

Phantom (vampire) load is the power devices sip while off but plugged in. Individually it's a few watts; collectively, a typical home wastes 5–10% of its electricity this way. The worst offenders are cable and satellite boxes, game consoles in 'instant-on' mode, older TVs, and always-on chargers and adapters. Group them on switched power strips, unplug rarely-used electronics, and enable deep-sleep or eco modes. Because phantom load runs 24/7, eliminating even 30 watts saves around 263 kWh — roughly $45 — a year.

Limits and edge cases

This is an estimate. Real consumption varies with duty cycle (fridges and AC cycle on and off), temperature settings, age and efficiency, and seasonal use. Tiered or time-of-use utility rates mean your marginal cost may differ from your average rate. For motor- and compressor-driven appliances, nameplate wattage overstates steady-state draw — a metered reading is more accurate. Use the result to compare options and prioritize, not as a guaranteed bill figure.
