Grade Replacement

newTotalPoints = (oldGPA × oldCredits) − (originalGradePoints × courseCredits) + (newGradePoints × courseCredits); newGPA = newTotalPoints / oldCredits

The new grade's quality points fully replace the original grade's quality points in your cumulative total. Total credit hours don't change, because the course's credits were already counted once.

Grade Averaging

avgPoints = (originalGradePoints + newGradePoints) / 2; newTotalPoints = (oldGPA × oldCredits) − (originalGradePoints × courseCredits) + (avgPoints × courseCredits); newGPA = newTotalPoints / oldCredits

Both attempts count, but instead of replacing the grade outright, the calculator averages the original and new grade points and applies that blended value across the course's credit hours.

newTotalPoints = (oldGPA × oldCredits) + (newGradePoints × courseCredits); newTotalCredits = oldCredits + courseCredits; newGPA = newTotalPoints / newTotalCredits

Neither attempt is removed. The original grade and its credits remain in your cumulative totals exactly as before, and the retake's quality points and credit hours are added on top — so the course's credit hours are counted twice.

Quality points The numeric value assigned to a letter grade (for example, A = 4.0, B = 3.0) multiplied by the course's credit hours. Cumulative GPA equals total quality points divided by total credit hours.

Cumulative GPA Your overall grade point average across every course you've taken, calculated as total quality points earned divided by total credit hours attempted.

Repeat course A course you take again after already receiving a grade for it, usually to improve a low grade or replace a failing grade.

Transcript notation A code or symbol (such as "R" for repeat) that many schools add next to a repeated course on the official transcript, so both attempts remain visible even under a grade-replacement policy.

The D's contribution (3 points, 3 credits) stays untouched. The B's 9 points and 3 credits are added on top: new total points = 135 + 9 = 144, new total credits = 45 + 3 = 48. New GPA = 144 / 48 = 3.00 — unchanged here, because adding a B at exactly your current average doesn't move the needle, even though your credit count grew.

How the Retake Grade Impact Calculator works

Your cumulative GPA is really just total quality points (grade points × credit hours, summed across every course) divided by total credit hours. The calculator backs out your current total quality points from the cumulative GPA and credits you enter, then recomputes that total under whichever retake policy you select — swapping the original grade's points for the new grade's points (replacement), averaging the two (averaging), or adding the new attempt on top without removing the old one (both-count). Dividing the recomputed total by the resulting credit count gives your new cumulative GPA.

Inputs and what they mean

Your current cumulative GPA and credits describe your academic record before the retake. The course credits field is the credit-hour weight of the specific class you're retaking — this is usually 3 or 4 credits for a typical college course. The original and new grade selects use the standard 4.0 scale (A = 4.0 down to F = 0.0). The retake policy selector is the input with the biggest effect on your result: grade replacement typically produces the largest GPA gain, grade averaging a smaller gain, and both-grades-count can leave your GPA nearly unchanged (or even dilute a strong improvement) because the low original grade never leaves your record.

Limits and edge cases

This is a general math model only — it does not know your specific school's rules. Some schools cap how many courses (or how many total credits) can be GPA-replaced, some only allow replacement for a grade below a certain threshold (like a C or D), and some exclude the retake option entirely for certain course levels. Financial aid, scholarship, and academic-standing eligibility calculations may use a different GPA than your transcript GPA and are not modeled here. Always confirm your exact school's retake policy, credit caps, and eligibility rules with your registrar before making decisions based on this calculator.

Does the old grade disappear from my transcript?+

Usually not. Even under a grade-replacement policy, most schools keep both attempts visible on the transcript — often with a notation like "R" for repeat — but exclude the original grade from the GPA calculation. The grade itself typically doesn't vanish; only its effect on your GPA changes.

Are the credit hours double-counted when I retake a course?+
