Class rank tells you your raw position among classmates, but it's hard to compare across schools of different sizes. Converting rank to a percentile — and optionally to an equivalent rank in another class size — puts your standing on a scale that's meaningful no matter how big or small your graduating class is.

How the calculation works

The calculator uses the standard rank-based percentile formula: percentile = (1 − (rank − 1) / classSize) × 100. Being ranked 1st in any class size always computes to the 100th percentile, since (rank − 1) is 0. As your rank number increases, your percentile falls proportionally to your class size — so the same numeric rank means something very different in a class of 30 versus a class of 500.

Inputs and what they mean

Rank is your 1-based numeric position in the class, typically assigned by your school registrar based on cumulative weighted or unweighted GPA. Class size is the total number of students in your graduating cohort. Both must be whole numbers, and rank can never exceed class size — the calculator flags this as an invalid input rather than silently producing a nonsensical result. The optional comparison class size on the Equivalent Rank tab lets you translate your percentile standing into a rank at a school with a different-sized class.

Limits and edge cases

This calculator does not model tied ranks — some schools assign identical rank numbers to students with the same GPA, which shifts the percentile math slightly from what a strict 1-through-N ranking would produce. It also doesn't account for a growing number of high schools that have stopped reporting class rank entirely, or colleges that de-emphasize it in favor of GPA and course rigor. In very small classes (under ~30 students), each rank position swings the percentile by several points, making the number less statistically meaningful than in a large class.
