Why pace and speed need a reciprocal formula

Pace and speed measure the same underlying effort in opposite directions: pace is time-per-distance (minutes per kilometer or mile), while speed is distance-per-time (kilometers or miles per hour). Because they're reciprocals, a straightforward multiplication factor — the kind that works for converting kilometers to miles — doesn't apply directly. Instead, this calculator converts every entry to a single internal base unit (seconds per kilometer), then derives whichever output unit you ask for from that base. That's why a faster pace (a smaller number of minutes) corresponds to a higher speed (a bigger number of km/h or mph), rather than the two scaling together.

Metric vs. imperial pace: min/km and min/mile

Most of the world tracks running pace in minutes per kilometer, while the United States and the United Kingdom typically use minutes per mile. Since one mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers, a min/km pace multiplied by that factor gives the equivalent min/mile pace — always a larger number, because a mile is a longer distance than a kilometer, so it takes longer to cover. Runners training with international plans or comparing race results across countries often need to switch between the two, and mixing them up is a common source of pacing mistakes on race day.

From pace to race finish time

Once a pace is expressed per kilometer, projecting a finish time for any standard race distance is simple multiplication: pace per kilometer times the race distance in kilometers.
