"How tall will my child be?" is one of the most common questions parents ask — and the honest answer is a range, not a number. Genetics sets the band — about 80% of height is inherited
Twin and family studies consistently find that roughly 80% of the variation in adult height is genetic. That's why the mid-parental method works as well as it does from just two numbers: tall parents tend to have tall children, short parents short children, and most kids land near the average of the two — shifted up for boys and down for girls because adult men average about 13 cm (5 inches) taller than women.
But 80% inherited is not 100% fixed. The same genes can express across a band of several centimetres depending on the environment a child grows up in. That remaining ~20% — nutrition, sleep, chronic illness, hormones, and the timing of puberty — is exactly why the prediction comes with a ± 8.5 cm range instead of a single guaranteed height.
How current height refines the estimate
The mid-parental method never changes for a given child — it only knows the parents. The current-height method adds new information: a child who is already tall for their age is likely to finish tall, and vice versa. It works because children reach a fairly predictable fraction of their adult height at each age. A boy is typically near 78% of his final height at 10 and 92% at 14; a girl, who matures earlier, is near 85% at 10 and 98% at 14.
Dividing current height by that fraction projects the finish. The method is shaky in early childhood, when years of variable growth still lie ahead, but it sharpens through the school years and becomes quite informative in the year or two around the pubertal growth spurt, when most of the remaining growth is close at hand. When the mid-parental and current-height estimates agree, you can trust the central number more; when they diverge, the spread between them is telling you how much real uncertainty there is.
Growth charts, percentiles, and when to see a doctor
Pediatricians rarely rely on a single prediction. They plot a child's height on a growth chart over time and watch the percentile — the child's rank against peers of the same age and sex. A child who tracks steadily along the 25th or 75th percentile is usually growing healthily, whatever the absolute number. What raises concern is a child who crosses percentiles — climbing or, more often, dropping across the lines — which can signal a nutritional, hormonal, or chronic-illness issue worth investigating.

Endocrine conditions — growth hormone deficiency, hypothyroidism, or precocious puberty — can move a child outside the predicted band entirely, which is one more reason these simple tools can't replace a clinical evaluation.
Timing matters too. An early-maturing child often looks tall among peers for a few years, then stops growing sooner; a late bloomer may look short, then keep growing after classmates have finished. Both can land exactly where their genetics predicted — the path there just looks different. That's why a one-time prediction is a snapshot, and a growth chart tracked over years is the real picture.
