Ketosis
A metabolic state in which the body primarily burns fat for fuel, producing ketone bodies, due to very low carbohydrate intake (typically under 50g/day). The goal of the ketogenic diet.
When carbohydrates are scarce, the liver converts fat into ketone bodies that supply energy to the brain and muscles. Reaching and holding ketosis is the goal of the ketogenic diet, which shifts most calories to fat with moderate protein.
