Loose-leaf tea brews best when the leaf amount, water temperature, and steep time all match the tea type — a ratio and steep time that suits black tea will scorch a delicate green tea and under-extract a robust herbal blend. This calculator scales the standard leaf-to-water ratio for five common tea types so you get a consistent cup every time, whether you're brewing one cup or a full pot.

How the Tea Brewing Calculator works

The calculator multiplies your water volume by a per-type leaf ratio: leafGrams = waterOz × (gPer8oz(teaType) ÷ 8). Each tea type's ratio, steep time, and water temperature reflect general tea-industry brewing conventions — black and oolong use roughly 2.25g per 8oz, green and white use about 2g, and herbal blends run slightly heavier at 2.5g since they have no tea-leaf tannins to worry about over-extracting.

Steep time and water temperature aren't derived from the water volume — they come from a fixed reference table per tea type, since those depend on the tea's oxidation level and leaf structure rather than how much water you're using.

Inputs and what they mean

The Water Amount and Unit fields set how much you're brewing — fluid ounces, milliliters, or standard 8oz cups. The Tea Type dropdown is the input with the biggest effect on the recommended steep time and temperature: green and white teas need water 20-40°F cooler than black or herbal tea, and a much shorter steep, to avoid extracting excess bitterness from their less-oxidized leaves.

On the Multiple Cups tab, entering a cup count scales both the water and leaf amounts linearly for the tea type selected on the Brew Recipe tab, which is useful for brewing a full pot or a pitcher of iced tea.

Limits and edge cases

These ratios and temperatures are general brewing conventions, not manufacturer-specific instructions — some single-origin or specialty teas (e.g., delicate Japanese gyokuro, or high-mountain oolongs) recommend narrower ranges than the broad category defaults used here. If a tea's packaging lists its own brewing instructions, follow those instead. This calculator also assumes loose-leaf tea; pre-portioned tea bags are typically calibrated for one cup regardless of the leaf-to-water ratio shown here.
