Coverage style How much frosting is applied to the outside of the cake. Thin/Naked shows some cake through the frosting (or uses a very light crumb coat only); Standard is a full, even outer coat; Heavy/Piped Decoration adds extra frosting for borders, rosettes, or other piped detail.

Crumb coat A thin first layer of frosting applied to seal in loose crumbs before the final coat goes on. It's included in the Standard and Heavy estimates as part of the outer-coat total — it isn't a separate frosting batch.

Filling layer The frosting spread between two stacked cake layers. A cake with N layers has N-1 filling layers, so a single-layer cake needs none, and a 3-layer cake needs 2.

Naked cake A cake with a very thin or absent outer coat that lets the cake layers show through. It typically uses roughly half the frosting of a fully coated Standard cake of the same size.

Buttercream The most common frosting type this calculator's coverage rates are calibrated for — American, Swiss, or Italian buttercream all spread at a similar volume per square inch. Ganache or thin glazes use noticeably less.

Piping Frosting applied through a piping bag to create borders, rosettes, shells, or other decorative detail. Piped decoration uses more frosting per square inch than a smooth spread coat because of the extra volume in the raised detail.
