Getting plant spacing right is the difference between a bed that produces a full harvest and one where crowded plants fight each other for light, water, and nutrients. This calculator turns your bed dimensions and a spacing recommendation into a concrete plant count, in either a square grid or a traditional row layout, so you can buy the right number of seedlings and lay out the bed with confidence.
How the calculation works
The calculator uses the standard nursery-and-extension-office method for counting plants along a line: divide the bed's length by the spacing, round down to a whole number of gaps, then add 1 for the plant that sits at the starting edge. A 96-inch-long row planted at 12-inch spacing fits 9 plants — 8 gaps of 12 inches plus the first plant. The same logic runs across the bed's width to get the number of rows, and total plants is just plants-per-row multiplied by rows.
Grid and Rows differ only in which spacing value drives the row-to-row calculation. A Grid layout reuses the plant spacing on both axes — the classic square-foot-gardening approach — while a Rows layout uses a separate, usually wider, row spacing to leave room for walking paths, cultivation equipment, or crops (like corn and squash) that need airflow between rows.
Choosing the right spacing for your crop
Spacing recommendations vary enormously by crop and are usually printed right on the seed packet or plant tag — that's the most reliable source, since it reflects the specific variety's mature size. As a rough guide, leafy greens and radishes often tolerate 4-8 inch spacing, bush beans and carrots 3-6 inches, tomatoes and peppers 18-24 inches, and vining crops like squash and cucumbers 24-36 inches or more. When in doubt, use the wider end of a recommended range — overcrowding is a more common mistake than under-planting.
Bed dimensions should be measured to the inside edge of any raised-bed frame or border, since that's the actual plantable area. Don't include walkways or the frame's material thickness in your length and width inputs.
Limits of this calculator
This calculator does not account for a border allowance (the extra inch or two of margin many gardeners leave between the outermost plant and the bed's edge) — add that manually by subtracting it from your bed dimensions before entering them, if you want a buffer. It also assumes uniform spacing throughout the bed; interplanting, succession planting, or companion-planting patterns that mix spacing within one bed aren't modeled here. Finally, the plant count is a geometric upper bound based on spacing alone — actual yield still depends on soil quality, sunlight, water, and the crop's specific growing conditions.
