Stocking rate is one of the highest-leverage decisions in pasture-based livestock management — get it right and forage stays productive year after year; get it wrong and overgrazing quietly erodes the pasture's future yield. This calculator converts your pasture's forage production and acreage into a recommended head count using the standard animal-unit system, and flags when your planned stocking exceeds what the land can sustainably support.

Why animal units, not head count, are the real currency

A single head count doesn't mean much on its own — 20 horses eat far more than 20 sheep. The animal unit (AU) system solves this by pricing every species against a common reference: a 1,000 lb mature cow eating about 26 lb of dry-matter forage a day. Horses, being larger, come in higher at 1.25 AU; sheep and goats, being much smaller, come in far lower at 0.20 and 0.15 AU respectively. Converting your herd to AU lets you compare stocking rate across species, or plan a mixed herd, on the same forage budget.

This also means the same pasture supports very different head counts depending on what you're grazing — a pasture that carries 34 cow-calf pairs might carry roughly 170 sheep instead, because five sheep consume about as much forage as one cow.

Forage production drives everything

Forage production (pounds of dry matter per acre per year) is the single most important — and most locally variable — number in this calculation. It depends on pasture type (improved, tame, or native rangeland), soil fertility, rainfall, and grazing management history. Improved, fertilized, irrigated pasture can yield 5,000-8,000+ lb/acre/yr, while unimproved or drought-stressed rangeland can fall well under 1,500-2,000 lb/acre/yr — a 3-5x difference that directly scales your safe stocking rate.

Because forage production swings so much by region and season, a local number beats a national average every time. Your county extension office, NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) office, or a recent forage clipping test are the most reliable sources — treat the calculator's defaults as a rough national planning estimate, not a substitute for a site-specific figure.

What overgrazing costs you later

Overgrazing isn't a single-season event — it's cumulative. Grazing forage faster than it regrows thins ground cover, weakens root systems, and lets less-palatable weeds move in, which lowers the pasture's forage production in future years. That creates a downward spiral: a pasture stocked above capacity produces less forage next season, which makes the same head count look even more overstocked.

Rotational grazing — dividing a pasture into sections and moving animals between them — is the most common fix. It lets each section rest and regrow while animals graze another, effectively raising the instantaneous stocking rate a given section can handle without exceeding the pasture's overall annual carrying capacity.
