How the Hay Bale Count Calculator works
The calculator starts from a daily intake estimate: bodyweight multiplied by a consumption rate, typically 2-3% of bodyweight per day for maintenance (extension services such as Penn State and university forage guides use this range as a standard rule of thumb for horses, cattle, sheep, and goats). Multiplying that daily intake by the number of animals and the number of feeding days gives total hay needed in pounds. Dividing by your bale weight and rounding up to the next whole bale gives the base bale count — you can't buy a fraction of a bale.
Inputs and what they mean
Animal type presets fill in a typical bodyweight (horses ~1,100 lb, beef cattle ~1,400 lb, dairy cows ~1,500 lb, sheep ~150 lb, goats ~130 lb) but you can always enter your own. Consumption rate is the input with the biggest swing on the result — a lactating or growing animal at 3% needs noticeably more hay than a mature animal at maintenance at 2%. Feeding days should cover your full hay-dependent period, not just the coldest weeks. Bale weight varies a lot in practice: weigh a sample bale from your actual supplier if precision matters, since the round/square presets are broad averages.
Limits and edge cases
This calculator assumes consistent daily intake and doesn't account for supplemental grain, pasture access on mild days, or individual animals with unusual metabolic needs. Bale weight in particular is highly variable — a "1,200 lb round bale" from one baler and moisture level can differ from another by several hundred pounds, so treat the built-in presets as a starting estimate and confirm with your actual supplier before placing a large hay order. For animals with special nutritional needs (pregnant, nursing, senior, or underweight), consult a veterinarian or extension agent for a tailored feeding plan.
