A 'week number' looks like a trivial label, but turning a date into the right one — and back again — involves a surprising amount of rule-following. This guide explains the ISO 8601 standard most of the world uses, the Sunday-start convention common in the United States, why the two disagree near New Year, and why a handful of years carry a mysterious week 53.
How ISO 8601 numbers weeks
ISO 8601 makes two decisions that fix everything else: weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday. An identical way to say the rule is 'the week that contains January 4th,' because Jan 4 is the earliest date that is always in week 1. A third equivalent: week 1 is the first week with at least four of its seven days in the new year.
The Thursday is the anchor. To find any date's ISO week, you shift it to the Thursday of its Monday–Sunday week, see which year that Thursday lands in (the week-year), and count how many weeks into that year it is. Because the Thursday decides the year, a date in late December can belong to week 1 of the following year, and a date in early January can belong to week 52 or 53 of the previous one.
The US convention and why it differs
Many US calendars, spreadsheets, and scheduling tools use a simpler scheme: weeks start on Sunday, and week 1 is whatever week contains January 1st. The number increments every time a new Sunday begins. Two consequences follow. First, week 1 and the final week of the year are often partial — week 1 might be just Wed–Sat if the year starts on a Wednesday. Second, the US week-year always equals the calendar year; there is no Thursday-driven boundary crossing.
That is exactly why the two systems disagree around New Year. Take January 1, 2023, a Sunday: ISO puts it in 2022-W52 (its Thursday is in 2022), while the US convention calls it week 1 of 2023. Neither is 'wrong' — they answer different questions. Why some years have 53 weeks
Seven days × 52 weeks is 364, one short of a 365-day year (two short of a leap year), so the leftover day (or two) occasionally pushes a year to 53 ISO weeks. Precisely, a year has 53 ISO weeks when January 1st falls on a Thursday, or when it is a leap year whose January 1st falls on a Wednesday. Recent and upcoming examples include 2015, 2020, and 2026. Over the full 400-year Gregorian cycle, 71 years are 53-week years — about one in five or six.
The fast way to check: December 28th is always in the last ISO week of its year, so that date's week number is the year's total. A 53-week year is the classic source of off-by-one bugs in retail '4-4-5' calendars, weekly payroll, and time-series reports that hard-code 52 weeks.
Where week numbers are used
Week numbers are the native unit of planning in much of the world. European manufacturing and logistics quote lead times and delivery dates as 'CW 32' or 'KW 32'; project plans and Gantt charts track progress by week; and retail finance runs on 4-4-5 fiscal calendars built from ISO-style weeks. Software and databases lean on ISO weeks too — PostgreSQL's EXTRACT(WEEK …), spreadsheet ISOWEEKNUM, and most date libraries implement the Thursday rule.
