Reptiles can't generate their own body heat, so an enclosure's basking bulb does the work their metabolism can't. Undersizing it leaves an animal unable to reach a healthy body temperature; oversizing it (without a thermostat) risks overheating. This calculator turns your tank size, target basking temperature, and room temperature into a starting-point bulb wattage.
How the wattage estimate works
The calculator starts from a base wattage bracket tied to enclosure size — bigger tanks need more watts to heat a basking spot to the same temperature, since there's more air volume and surface area losing heat. That base wattage is then scaled by how large a temperature rise you're asking the bulb to produce: the gap between your target basking temp and your room's ambient temperature. A bigger gap needs more watts; a smaller gap (a warm room, a lower-temp species) needs fewer. The final number is rounded up to the nearest bulb size actually sold at pet stores — 50W, 75W, 100W, or 150W — so you're not left needing a wattage that doesn't exist on the shelf.
Inputs and what they mean
Tank size (gallons) sets the base wattage bracket. Species is a convenience — picking one prefills a commonly-used target basking temperature for that animal, which you can still adjust for your specific reptile's needs or vet guidance. Target basking temp is the hot-spot temperature directly under the bulb, not the tank's average — this is almost always higher than the general ambient temperature inside the enclosure. Room temp is the ambient temperature of the space the enclosure sits in, which the bulb has to heat up from; a colder room (a garage, a drafty room in winter) pushes the recommended wattage up.
Limits and edge cases
This is a rule-of-thumb starting point, not a guarantee — enclosure material, lid type (screen tops lose far more heat than glass), drafts, and bulb placement all shift the real-world result. Always verify the actual basking-spot temperature with a thermometer or temp gun after setup and adjust from there. Very large enclosures (120+ gallons) often need more than one heat source to keep the basking zone even, which the calculator flags as an advisory. This tool estimates heat only — it does not size UVB output, which is a separate bulb on its own replacement schedule. Always pair a fixed-wattage bulb with a thermostat so it can't overheat the enclosure on a warm day; this calculator does not replace that safeguard.
