Picking the right crate size is mostly about giving your dog enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down flat — without so much extra space that housetraining suffers. This calculator turns a couple of measurements (or a rough weight estimate) into one of the standard crate sizes sold by every major pet retailer.

How the Dog Crate Size Calculator works

The calculator starts from your dog's nose-to-tail length and floor-to-head/ear height, applies a modest buffer (25% on length, 10% on height) to account for natural movement, and rounds up to the nearest of the seven standard crate lengths sold industry-wide: 18, 22, 24, 30, 36, 42, and 48 inches. Each standard size is also checked against a typical interior height for that crate, so a long-but-tall dog isn't recommended a crate that's technically long enough but too short to stand up in.

Inputs and what they mean

By Measurement is the more accurate method: measure length from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail (not including the tail itself), and height from the floor to the top of the head or ears while your dog is standing normally. By Weight is a faster fallback that uses a standard breed-weight-to-crate-size chart — useful for quick shopping-list decisions, but less precise than direct measurement since body shape varies meaningfully between breeds at the same weight (a long-bodied Dachshund and a compact Beagle can weigh the same but need very different crate shapes).

Limits and edge cases

This is a general sizing guide, not a substitute for checking a specific crate's listed interior dimensions before buying — manufacturers vary slightly, and airline-approved travel crates follow separate IATA sizing rules rather than the standard wire-crate sizes used here. For a growing puppy, always size the crate for expected adult dimensions and use a divider panel to manage the interim space, rather than buying a smaller crate that will need replacing. If your dog's measurements exceed the largest standard size (48 inches), look at XL or giant-breed crates and double-check dimensions directly against your dog before purchasing.
