Print resolution — measured in dots per inch (DPI) — determines how sharp your photographs look when printed. Understanding the relationship between your camera's megapixels, the target DPI, and the final print size helps you avoid costly reprints and choose the right output settings every time.
The DPI Quality Scale
Not all print situations require the same DPI. The generally accepted thresholds are: 300 DPI — the gold standard for photo-quality printing, suitable for any size up to your maximum print size. 200–299 DPI — Good quality, indistinguishable from 300 DPI at normal viewing distances (18 inches or more). 150–199 DPI — Acceptable for large prints viewed from 3+ feet, such as trade show banners or room-sized wall prints. Below 150 DPI — Pixelation becomes visible at close range; only suitable for billboards and displays viewed from 10+ feet.
Viewing distance is the key variable. The human eye resolves about 300 dots per inch at a comfortable reading distance of 12 inches. Double the viewing distance and you halve the required resolution — which is why large-format posters can look excellent at 150 DPI.
Megapixels and Maximum Print Size
A camera's megapixel count directly determines the maximum print size at a given DPI. Divide the pixel dimensions by your target DPI to get the maximum print size in inches. A 24-megapixel camera (6,000×4,000 pixels) produces a maximum print of 20×13.3 inches at 300 DPI, or 40×26.7 inches at 150 DPI.
Common camera megapixel counts and their 300 DPI print limits: 12 MP (4,032×3,024) → ~13×10 inches; 24 MP (6,000×4,000) → ~20×13 inches; 45 MP (8,192×5,464) → ~27×18 inches; 61 MP (9,504×6,336) → ~32×21 inches.
When Lower DPI Is Acceptable
For large-format prints — anything 16×20 inches or bigger — strict 300 DPI requirements become impractical unless you shoot with a high-megapixel camera. Professional print labs often specify 150–180 DPI as acceptable for canvas gallery wraps and large wall prints, because viewing distance compensates for the lower pixel density.
AI-based upscaling tools (Adobe Lightroom's Enhance feature, Topaz Gigapixel AI, DxO PureRAW) can genuinely improve print quality by recovering detail, not just interpolating pixels. Upscaling a 16×20 print from Acceptable (189 DPI) to Good (280 DPI) is often worthwhile for important prints. However, start from the highest-quality source file — upscaling a heavily-compressed JPEG adds very little over native resolution.
