This calculator reduces any round bar, square bar, rectangular bar, or plate to a cross-section area times a length, then multiplies by steel's fixed 0.2836 lb/in³ density to get weight.
How the calculation works
Every shape this calculator supports reduces to the same underlying formula: weight = cross-section area × length × density × quantity. The cross-section area depends on the shape — a circle for round bar, a square for square bar, a rectangle for rectangular bar and for the width-by-thickness face of plate. Once you have that area, multiplying by the piece's length gives volume, and multiplying volume by 0.2836 lb/in³ (steel's standard reference density) gives weight. This density figure comes from standard engineering reference tables (MatWeb, eFunda) for mild/carbon steel.
Why steel density is fixed here
Unlike a general metal-weight calculator, this tool assumes mild/carbon steel for every calculation — the most common structural and fabrication grade. That keeps the interface simple for the most frequent use case: estimating the weight of ordinary steel stock. Nominal vs. actual dimensions
This calculator uses whatever dimensions you enter, treating them as the actual size of the stock. Mill-produced bar and plate can run slightly over or under a nominal size, and cut lengths always include some saw kerf loss. For a rough estimate or shipping-weight budget, nominal dimensions are close enough. For a precise cut list or a quote you're standing behind, measure the actual stock or use the supplier's certified weight per foot.
