A filled hot tub is one of the heaviest loads you can put on a residential deck — often enough to double its design load in a single spot. This guide shows how to translate a tub's weight into pounds per square foot, compare it to what your joists can carry under IRC 2024 R507 and AWC DCA-6, and what it takes to build up to it safely.

Why a filled hot tub is such a big load

An empty hot tub is manageable, but water is heavy — 8.34 pounds per gallon — and a 6–7 person tub holds 400–500 gallons. Add the shell and the people and a filled tub weighs 4,000–6,000 pounds concentrated on 40–50 square feet. That works out to roughly 100 psf or more, versus the ~50 psf (40 live + 10 dead) a residential deck is designed to carry. A hot tub can double a deck's design load in one spot, which is why so many decks need help before they can hold one.

Checking the load against your framing

Deck capacity comes down to the joists — their size, on-center spacing, unsupported span, and lumber species. The IRC 2024 Table R507.6 and AWC DCA-6 span tables list the maximum span each combination can carry at the 50 psf design load. At a shorter span a joist keeps reserve capacity; at its maximum span it has essentially none. What reinforcement takes

When a deck fails the check, several levers raise capacity: upsizing the joists (a 2x8 to a 2x10 or 2x12), tightening the spacing (16 inches down to 12), or adding a mid-span beam on posts and footings, which halves the joist span and roughly quadruples capacity. A hot tub often needs more than one lever together. Alternatively, posts and footings placed directly under the tub carry its load straight to the ground, bypassing the deck framing so the joists no longer govern.

The ground-pad alternative and when to call a pro

The cheapest safe option is frequently not to put the tub on the deck at all. A 4-inch steel-reinforced concrete slab on compacted gravel, set at grade beside or below the deck, carries the tub directly and adds zero load to the structure.
