This calculator uses the standard tile-industry volumetric formula to turn your tile dimensions and joint settings into a pounds-of-grout estimate, plus how many bags to buy.
How the Grout Coverage Calculator works
The calculator computes the volume of the grout joints per square foot of tile, then converts that volume to weight using a standard dry-grout bulk density of 100 lb per cubic foot. The volume depends on the tile's perimeter-to-area ratio — (tile length + tile width) / (tile length × tile width) — multiplied by the joint width and depth. Smaller tiles have proportionally more joint length per square foot of coverage, so they always need more grout than larger tiles laid with the same joint settings. A 10% waste allowance is added to the raw estimate to cover spillage and touch-ups, matching the buffer most manufacturers and installers already build into their own coverage charts.
Inputs and what they mean
Tile length and width are the face dimensions of a single tile, in inches — measure the actual tile, not the nominal size some manufacturers round to. Tile thickness doubles as the assumed grout joint depth, since grout is applied flush with the tile face; 3/8 in (0.375) is a common ceramic and porcelain tile thickness. Joint width is the gap you're leaving between tiles — 1/16 in to 1/8 in for rectified tile, up to 1/2 in for handmade or rustic tile. Total area is the full square footage of the job. Joint width has an outsized effect on the result since it appears directly in the volume formula.
Limits and edge cases
This formula assumes a rectangular grid layout with uniform joints — herringbone, basketweave, or other patterns with variable joint lengths will need a hand adjustment. It also assumes a standard dry-grout density; epoxy grout and some specialty polymer-modified grouts are denser and will need more weight than this estimate for the same volume, so check the product's technical data sheet before a large purchase. For very large or irreversible jobs, buy the calculated amount plus one extra bag so a dye-lot mismatch doesn't force you to search for a matching batch mid-project.
