Worked example: annual salary over 26 pay dates

For a $78,000 salary paid evenly over 26 nominal pay dates, gross pay is $3,000 per check before deductions and withholding. A three-date month contains $9,000 of scheduled gross pay in this simple example; a two-date month contains $6,000. This does not increase the annual salary.

A third paycheck is not automatically free of benefit deductions or retirement contributions. Employers may collect certain deductions on 24, 26 or another number of checks. Confirm the plan’s deduction schedule before treating the entire third deposit as extra spending money.

Use a known scheduled payday

A known unadjusted January 7 or January 21 Friday payday belongs to Schedule A; January 14 or January 28 belongs to Schedule B. Use a scheduled date from the employer’s calendar, because an early bank deposit can be misleading. These lists describe pay dates, not pay-period start and end dates.

A leap year has 366 days, but 2028 has only 52 Fridays. Both Friday anchor sequences therefore contain 26 dates. Some Saturday or Sunday anchors can contain 27 dates; that fact should not be copied onto the Friday schedules. Employer adjustments can also move actual payments across a year boundary.

Method, assumptions and release timing

OPM published 2028 observances and Federal Reserve schedules, with UTC civil-calendar enumeration. Nominal payroll anchors are not employer-approved payment or settlement dates. New Year’s Day 2028 is federally observed on December 31, 2027.

Civil dates and published observances are available now. Employer calendars and payment-provider cutoffs require separate confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

Are there 27 biweekly Friday paychecks in 2028?

Neither common unadjusted Friday schedule has 27 dates in 2028. The January 7 and January 14 anchors each have 26. Other weekdays and employer adjustments can differ.

Which months have three paychecks?

For the January 7 anchor, March and September have three nominal dates. For the January 14 anchor, June and December do. Your actual payment policy can change deposit dates.

Are these pay-period start and end dates?

No. They are nominal pay-date sequences. Your employer defines the work periods, payroll lag, approval deadlines and bank settlement arrangements.

Does a federal office holiday always close banks?

No. Federal office observances, Federal Reserve schedules, bank branch hours and individual payment services can differ. A Saturday holiday does not automatically close Federal Reserve Banks on the preceding Friday. Check the provider’s processing calendar.
